What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is the study, examination and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity, the teeth and their supporting structures. Restorative Dentistry includes the dental monospecialties of endodontics (root canal treatment) , periodontics (gum disease) and prosthodontics (crown & bridge and dentures) (including implantology), and its foundation is based upon how these interact in the management of cases requiring multifaceted care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Restorative dentistry is the study, diagnosis and integrated management of diseases of the teeth and their supporting structures and the rehabilitation of the dentition to functional and aesthetic requirements of the individual. Restorative dentistry is a unique niche dental specialty that encompasses the dental specialties of endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics and its foundation is based upon how these interact in cases requiring multifaceted care. Restorative Dentistry Consultant/s are able to undertake and oversee complex advanced dental cases including failing dentition.
A Prosthodontist is a specialist dentist who deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related mouth or jaw structures by bridges, dentures or prostheses. They receive an additional advanced training after dental school to specialise in this field. They are able to provide high quality sustainable aesthetic (cosmetic) restoration and carry out replacement of teeth. A Prosthodontist Restores optimal appearance and function to your smile. The planning, surgical placement and restoration of implants and rehabilitation of occlusion with prostheses all fall under the field of prosthodontics.
Prosthodontics is a broad specialty and the subspecialties are:
- Fixed Prosthodontics
- Removable Prosthodontics
- Maxillofacial Prosthodontics
- Implant Prosthodontics
Restorative Dentistry consultant has further 2-3 years of clinical, managerial and leadership training that they use in their day to day practice to deliver for safe, effective care so that their patients always will have a positive experience of their dental journey.
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth also known as gum disease). Periodontists receive extensive training in both of these areas and more, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.
While some general dentists treat less serious periodontal cases, many will refer their patients to periodontists for the more challenging periodontal cases. Similarly, while some general dentists perform dental implant procedures, many will refer their patients to periodontists for the more challenging implant cases as well.
In addition to handling challenging periodontal and implant cases, periodontists also provide a variety of other specialized services. These include scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of a tooth’s root is cleaned), root surface debridement (in which damaged root tissue is removed), oral inflammation treatment, and cosmetic periodontal procedures and gum augmentation surgery such as root coverage of recession defects and periodontal regeneration.
